Many successful people swear by a set morning routine to help them to focus and to ensure a super productive day. While everyone’s morning routine will vary, there are quite a few common practices that many successful and productive people follow each morning.
If you are battling to get out of bed and get going, then try implementing some or all these morning routine habits to kick-start your day.
1. Prepare the night before
You can get a head-start each morning by doing just a little bit of preparation the night before. Decide what you are going to wear and make sure your clothes are ready for the next morning. Don’t look at any screens for at least an hour or more before you go to bed to help you to unwind and prepare you for a good night’s rest.
2. Drink a glass of lemon water
By drinking a glass of lemon water as soon as you wake up on an empty stomach will give you a boost in energy. It is best consumed lukewarm and on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. Not only is lemon water good for your energy levels, but it has tremendous health benefits too.

Regular exercise in the mornings will increase your energy levels and give you a rise in feel-good hormones which will help you stay happy throughout the day. Exercise is therefore not only good for your physical health, but for your mental health and well-being too. Some people do yoga, some prefer high-energy type exercises. Even taking a nice long walk is good. Whatever you fancy – as long as you get moving. If you get bored doing just one type of exercise then try and mix it up to bring a bit of variety to your daily exercise routine to keep things interesting for you.
4. Prayer or meditation
Daily prayer and/or meditation has very powerful benefits including improved mental focus, reduced anxiety and depression and an overall increase in joy and happiness. I personally am a firm believer in the power of prayer to connect to a higher power (God) and I can attest to the incredible results this has. Meditation too is a very powerful practice with many scientific research to back it up. Even the Bible mentions that meditation on the Word will make you prosperous and bring you good success (Joshua 1:8).
Try to read every day. You will be surprised by how it boosts your ability to think creatively and increase your ability to solve problems. Warren Buffet and Tai Lopez are well-known for their great reading habits. I try and read something uplifting every day including the Bible. I like to read just 15 – 20 minutes in the morning and then I read again at night. I read longer at night. It helps me to wind down again before sleep.
6. Daily affirmations
I have a small book with all my daily affirmations written down that I keep in my drawer next to my bed. I read it every morning and every night. I also include some of my goals. That way I keep my goals in front of my eyes regularly. It helps me to stay focused and on track. According to Jack Canfield and Napopleon Hill amongst others, saying positive affirmations out load every day will reprogram your subconscious mind and help you get rid of deep-seated negative ideas about yourself and certain things in your life such a money. It can then help you attract the things that you do want instead of the things that you don’t want in your life.
7. Practice Gratitude
Think of 2 or 3 things for which are grateful in life and thank your maker for them. It could be simple things or anything that you are truly grateful for. Gratitude opens the door for more good things to come into your life.
Write a page or two in a journal. The process of journaling is very cathartic and has been known to help you to reflect and plan. It can help you to increase creativity and productivity. Many great people made journaling part of their morning habits, including John Rockefeller, Thomas Edison and Winston Churchill.
9. Daily goal list
This is something I swear by and got into by accident. By writing down my daily goals I get so much more done, I find. It helps me to focus my day and get the really important stuff done. It also gives me a real sense of accomplishment knowing that I have managed to get most or all of the items done that are on the list. It also helps me to plan my time more effectively.
10. Eat a healthy breakfast
Eating a healthy breakfast puts you ahead of a lot of people who skip breakfast. People who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight or obese and they tend to be less hungry over the course of the day. By eating a healthy breakfast you will have more energy, improved short-term memory and it will help you to concentrate more intensely and for longer periods of time.
The not to-do’s
Lastly here’s what not to do. Do not read emails or text messages first thing in the morning. It can throw you totally of course. I am struggling with this one. I know it’s bad, but the temptation is so great to just take a quick peek. Don’t do it. It is almost guaranteed to get you of track. I am talking from experience.
What are some of the things that you do to ensure a productive day?
